Mindful Eating

Food can become nutrients and sources of energy to make you healthy or to harm your body and make you sick. Therefore, it is important to be mindful about choosing and eating the right food for our health.

To eat mindfully is to embrace the full experience of preparing and consuming food. As people become more conscious about health, eating is no longer done just to satisfy hunger. Food can become nutrients and sources of energy to make you healthy or to harm your body and make you sick. Therefore, it is important to be mindful about choosing and eating the right food for our health.

How do you choose food that is best for your health? Sure, googling ‘Healthy Food’ can give a lot of information on how to choose food, such as buying organic, non-GMO, healthy recipes, etc. However, it doesn’t mean much if you are not mindful of your body. Simply, following what others say might not be the best way to choose your food. If you eat certain food, see how your body reacts. Do you feel any difference? Try this food for a set period of time and keep it in your routine meal; you might experience a positive change in you. If the food does not make you feel good, try something else.  This will guide you to learn what your body wants and needs to maintain your health and wellness.

How to eat food is as important as choosing food. How often do you swallow your food without really tasting it? Moreover, do you smell your food -- see, touch, and even hear each bite as it begins to nourish your body? Can you savor your food even before it enters your mouth? Notice the responses that arise in the physical body before you begin eating. When you can perceive the physiological reactions, such as saliva production at the onset of hunger, you are connected with your body. This is to return to a more natural state where your mind and body are integrated, rather than separated, from one another.

The ability to eat is one we often take for granted. Chewing can either be an action done mindlessly or mindfully. The difference is often overlooked. If each bite is not only tasted, but taken in by every sense, it becomes that much moredelicious and able to help your body naturally recover from stressful circumstances. Additionally, mindfulness in any respect can heighten one’s overall sense of focus in every aspect of life.

Finally, a prayer of gratitude can be incredibly helpful in slowing down, and staying mindful. Whether it’s for the food, or the person who prepared it -- this practice can change your perspective quickly and help to calm even the most agitated of minds.
