When you feel lazy and find yourself choosing a comfortable couch and blanket over your running shoes, just think of how hard you worked out over the summer to stay in shape and to take care of your health. It is too much to sacrifice the great result of your hard work for a temporary comfort and pleasure over the winter.

Happy New Year! I wish you good health and happiness in 2015. Now it feels like winter, here in New Jersey. Until this past Monday, the temperature did not fall below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the freezing point. The colder the weather gets, the less active people become; this pattern definitely affects their exercise routine. When you feel lazy and find yourself choosing a comfortable couch and blanket over your running shoes, just think of how hard you worked out over the summer to stay in shape and to take care of your health. It is too much to sacrifice the great result of your hard work for a temporary comfort and pleasure over the winter.

There are many benefits to winter exercise; some are obvious and others are not. Nevertheless, they are profound. They are:

1. Overcome SAD (Seasonal affective disorder)
2. Improved Detoxification
3. Improved Immune system
4. Reduced Stress level and boosted energy
5. Weight Loss

All of these are vital for your health especially when the weather is cold. When your body is cold, your immunity gets low and consequently, your body is more prone to getting sick.  Then how should we exercise during this winter season? There are plenty of ways to keep pace with your regular exercise. Just need to make a simple modification.

First, consider working out indoors if you do not want to be outside. Swimming is a great winter exercise option for both cardio and muscular exercises. . If you want the full scale of exercise, do not hesitate to join a gym. You can also join a gym that has a good swimming facility. Alternately, work out at home when you are not swimming or at the gym. There are a lot of home fitness options – DvDs, online fitness sessions, and even video games. Some of these require little to no exercise equipment, which is great.

Second, try an in-class exercise such as Yoga, Tai-chi or Ki-going. These martial arts and exercises are excellent choices for your fitness and overall health. They help you to open up blockages in your blood vessels and energy channels, and they promote good blood circulation to boost your immune system. Since it will be mostly group exercises, others will motivate you to work out. They are also not extreme fitness routines, which reduces the risk of exercise injuries. Do you think they are too mild for you? Give it a try! You will definitely see why they are so effective for your fitness and health.

Lastly, if you absolutely want to and have to exercise outside, do it. Don’t stay home watching TV and feeling miserable all day. Warm up inside and make sure to wear layers of clothes to control your body temperature.

During the winter, your body needs more energy to maintain your body temperature. To help with this, eat a good amount of food and make sure that you drink enough water.
